Can You Rent A Dumpster With A Narrow Driveway?

Generally, when you rent a dumpster, the rental company will come park it in your driveway, and you can load it up as you wish. But what if your driveway is really narrow and won't accommodate a typical dumpster? Don't give up on the idea of dumpster rental yet. You have a few options to consider.

1. Find a company that offers compact dumpsters.

Even though an average dumpster might be too wide for your driveway, you may be able to find a compact one that will fit. Dumpster companies in cities are beginning to carry these more often. They are often pretty small dumpsters — they may only fit 8 or 10 yards of trash. If this is not enough space for you, then you could arrange to have the company come remove the original dumpster and replace it with a second one once it is full.

2. Have the dumpster parked on skids in your lawn.

As long as it is not too wet outside, a dumpster rental company may be able to come put down a few metal skids in your lawn, and then park the dumpster on top of it. Your yard probably will suffer some damage, but repairing a few divots and some worn grass won't be too tough. Be prepared to sign a release form absolving the dumpster company from any responsibility if damage is done to your lawn. Also, note that you should only rent a smaller, 10 or 15-yard dumpster if you need to park it on grass. Heavier dumpsters may sink too much.

3. Borrow driveway space from a neighbor.

Do any of your neighbors have wider driveways? Ask if they would be willing to let you park a dumpster in their driveway for a few days. You can take the items to be disposed of over to the dumpster in a wheelbarrow. To compensate your neighbor, consider letting them dispose of some of their extra stuff in the dumpster, too.

4. Park the dumpster in the street.

If you don't live on a very busy street, and street parking is allowed, call up your town and ask if it would be okay for you to park a dumpster on the side of the road for a few days. They might require you to pay a small permit fee, but this is worth the convenience of having the dumpster right in front of your home.

If you're looking for a dumpster rental but you have a narrow driveway, one of the solutions above will probably work for you.
